  • ASHTAVAKRA **GITA (SWAMI ANUBHAVANANDA)

    Swami Rama

We come across many Gita-s in our spiritual literature. The most popular one is Srimad Bhagavad Gita which is attributed to Bhagavan Sri Krishna & presented to us by Bhagavan Veda Vyasa. Th-ere, the teacher is God-head on one sied while the student is utterly confused. Astavakra Gita is unlike this. Here, both the teacher Astavakra & the student Janaka are alrea-dy enlightened & they are living this knowledge. However, at some moment in the life of Janaka,t-here seems to be an urgency to know the Absolute & it is only sage Astavakra who could he-lp him come out of his own mental block.

  • At the Feet of A Himalaya Master (Remembering Swami Rama) volume 2

    Swami Rama

It is again my privilege to serve as the editor of the series, At the Feet of Himalaya Master. Volume one of the series was a compilation of my reminiscences of Swami Rama, along with those of Kamal Didi (Patrice Hafford) who served Swamiji tirelessly for 16 years as his personal assistant, and is now the Director of the Swami Rama Centre on the campus of the Himalaya Institute Hospital Trust. The present volume two, includes the reminiscences of Mr. Gus Gatto, Mrs. Eileen Diorio & Ms. B. Maithili and spans a period of time from the early seventies to the last days of Swamiji’s bodily manifestation. In the preface to the fist volume, I narrated the story of nine blind men examining an elephant, each one describing the elephant very differently, depending on which part of the elephant they got hold of. If they had assembled their impressions into a composite whole, they might have arrived at a better understanding of the elephant. Similarly, the reminiscences of Swamiji’s disciples, taken individually, can no more provide a true picture of Swamiji, than the individual descriptions of the nine blind men, describing the elephant. However, collectively, the multi-volume series, At the Feet of a Himalaya Master, may come closer to providing a composite appreciation of the spiritual phenomenon, known to us as Swami Rama of the Himalayas. Gus Gatto was a sales representative for a plastic films company in Chicago when he first met Swami Rama. He never knew what hit him, when Swami Rama reached out to shake his hand. Soon after this first meeting, Gus was initiated by Swamiji and became an ardent student and tireless worker for Swamiji’s mission Gus’s narrative is permeated by his remarkable devotion and love for Swamijij. This is all the more remarkable in its western context, where the guru-discipal tradition is less pervasive than it is in the East. Gus is a disciple with a large heart capable of great love, and this comes through very palpably in narrative. Gus’s description of the first International Congress of the Himalayan International Institute at Chicago makes us appreciate the grand vision and organizational skills of Swami Rama. We are also made to realize that we are all puppets in the loving hands of a master puppeteer.

  • At the Feet of A Himalayan Master (Remembering Swami Rama) volume1

    Swami Rama

My First Meeting with Swami Rama “A genuine spiritual teaching, one who is assigned to teach according to tradition, searches out good students. He looks for certain signs and symptoms; he wants to know who is prepared. No student can fool a master. The master easily perceives how well the student is prepared. If he finds that the student is not yet ready, he will gradually prepare him for the higher teachings. When the wick and oil are properly prepared, the master lights the lamp. That is his role. The resulting light is divine.” I was a post-graduate student at the University of Minnesota. One fall morning in 1969, I was walking across the campus when I spotted a poster corner announcing that a Himalayan monk, Swami Rama, would be giving an afternoon lecture on Thursday, at the student union building, Coffman Union, on the training of monks in the monasteries of the Himalayans. I was intrigued and resolved to attend the lecture. Thursday was Thanksgiving, and I was invited to an American friend’s home for Thanksgiving. I was anxious to leave for the lecture, and unmindful of etiquette, I decided to tea and run. Arriving at Coffman Union, I was dismayed to find the main entrance locked. Being new to the U.S., I did not realize that everything shuts down over the Thanksgiving weekend. I was sorely disappointed at having missed the lecture. Dr. Usharbudh Arya, Professor of Sanakrit at the University of Minnesota, had an advertisement in the campus newspaper, The Minnesota Daily,’ about a course in raja yoga, which he planned to teach in the fall of 1970 in the attic of his home near the Mississippi river. I called the number given in order to enroll, and found myself talking to Dr. Arya, who was very happy to hear that an Indian student was interested in the course! All of other students were Americans. It was very hot that fall and temperatures in the attic were reminiscent of India. The attic was packed with aspiring, perspiring raja yogis. Dr. Arya’s lectures were brilliant. I was fascinated by the science of raja yoga, having been nurtured only on Western sciences during my education in India. One day, Dr. Arya announced that him guru would be coming to town, to lecture at the downtown Curtis. I was thrilled at the prospect of meeting the guru of this inspiring teacher. On the appointed evening, I hurried to the Curtis Hotel. My face fell when Dr. Arya introduced the audience to his guru, Swami Rama! I do not remember much of the evening’s lecture, so great was my disappointment.

  • FREEDOM FROM STRESS A Holistic Approach (Foreword by Barbara B.Brown, Ph.D.) Phil Nuernberger, Ph.D.

    Swami Rama

We are a perpetually anxious species. We are constantly creating stress by not having control over our environment.A human being is the architect of his own destiny, but we have allowed fear, loneliness & deapair to disturb us through the ages. Ancient myths describe great struggle- s: the Vedas are full of intense yearning, & Genesis tells of the fall from grace to misery. Christ in the Sermon on the Mount talks about perfection, & Chrisianity maintains that a human being has to be free from imperfections in order to attain the ultimate reality. Buddha established his philosophy on the premise that life is suffering, & the Yoga Sutras are directed to those who seek liberation from the bonds of human sorrow, strain & stress.

  • WALKING WITH A HIMALAYAN MASTER (SWAMI RAMA) BY JUSTIN O’ BRIEN

    Swami Rama

I woke up sharply. “What was that about?’’ I thought “Perhaps I shouldn’t have eaten that pizza.’’ At that time in my life, I was keeping a dream diary, so I wrote down the episodes of the three-night serial dream, chuckling about those neat lightguys & promptly forgetting about the dreams. I had other concerns to drive them from my mind. The income-less summer months weren’t passing fast enough. I was anxious to get back into teaching theology, but my classes at Loyola University of Chicago did not being until September. My wife, Theresa, & had just returned from two & a half years in Europe where I had continued my advanced degree work. Loyola had agreed to a absence for me during that time but the university administrators had been relieved to know that they wouldn’t have to support me. As a condequence, we had used up all our savings, spent up several loans, & gone into nock. Theresa was holding a small secretarial job until her own teaching would begin in the Fall, but still we were out of money & bouncing back & forth between credit cards trying to make ends meet. Since I didn’t have a car yet, July found me wandering through the Loyola campus, greeting old friends, checking the bookstore, & strolling around hoping to bump into familiar faculty. Much had changet in two years. Every now & then I passed by a bulletin board, either on campus, at an Evanston health food store near our apsartment, or on an elevated train station, & I scanned for upcoming events & community announcement. My eyes repeatedly caught a flyer that described a forthcoming seminar on healing, to be held on September 9, at plymouth, Wisconsin, in the woods just north of Milwaukee. The speaker eas to be His Holiness Swami Ram of the Himalayes. Since I was a brilliant college professor, I never once made the connection between the announcements & my dreams.
