Prologue:-The time is the nineteenth century. The place is India. A tremendous storm is gradually gathering force over the nation’s cultural horizon. Very soon it will sweep through this stuffy land & inflame its flagging spirit. Yea, the British are here. They are here as the harbingers of a new age, the modem age. They are here with a new teachnology, with new knowledge, new values & new beliefs. Their gauge is reason. Their creed is humanitarianism.
But is not British policy in india racist and reactionary? Are not railway carriages and park-benches marked ,’For Europeans Only’? Is not the countary being prohreesively ruralised? Is She not being turned into an agricultural colony of industrial England? Is not unemployment rampant and increasing?
But it is the great irony of the british presence in india. They have ushered in the modem age, but their great representatives here fight the very forces they supposedly champion.
